1. What equipment is required to get started?
From a simple lab setup to a full deployment, there are required products and accessories for a functioning GPON network. The products are:

2. What is the difference between Active and Passive fiber?
Active fiber requires powered devices at all endpoints as well as each connection or distribution point in the full path of the fiber. |

3. What is the difference between Class B+ and Class C+ modules?
The UFiber OLT includes a single UF-GP-B+ module in the package. Users can add more GPON SFP modules to populate the other PON ports.
The advantage of using the C+ module over the B+ module is the added transmit power which helps overcome attenuation to ensure there is an acceptable signal level at the ONU. See the UF‑GP‑B+ / UF‑GP‑C+ product page for more information. |

4. Can I rate-limit customers using the OLT?
Yes! With UFiber firmware v3.0 and higher each ONU profile has a bandwidth limit option that can limit all ONUs assigned to that profile.

5. What third-party ONUs can I connect to the UFiber OLT?
The UFiber ONUs are the only ones that are compatible with the UFiber OLT. Other third-party ONUs are not compatible.

6. What third-party OLTs can I connect to using the UFiber ONUs?
UFiber ONUs can connect to some third-party OLTs such as Huawei, Fiberhome, and ZTE.

7. How far can my ONU be from my OLT?
The maximum distance from the OLT to the ONU is 20km based on the attenuation caused by multiple sources.

8. Can I use ONUs as media converters without an OLT?
No. The ONU must connect to an OLT and can not connect directly to another ONU.
There are other solutions to convert copper to fiber such as using a switch with both a copper and SFP port or a copper to SFP media converter such as the UFiber Active Ethernet (UF-AE). If PoE output is required, the Ubiquiti F‑POE‑G2 may meet your requirements. More details on the UF-AE can be found in the Using the UFiber Active Ethernet (UF-AE) article. |

9. Is there a GPON SFP module available that can connect directly to my router or switch?
Yes, we have the UFiber Instant (UF-Instant) available that can connect directly to a compatible router or switch.

10. What if my power signal is outside of the ONUs acceptable power range (-8 dBm to -28 dBm)?
The ONU does not stop functioning at exactly at -28 dBm. You may experience a working ONU with a slightly lower power signal.
We recommend to always plan for a power level of at least -28 dBm at the ONU. |

11. Will I experience better performance with a lower signal loss at the ONU? (-8 dBm vs -28 dBm)?
The bandwidth will not increase with a better higher power value. Think of this as either on when inside or off when outside the range.
The UF-Nano has a built in display showing the Rx and Tx optical power levels to easily identify whether the signal is in the acceptable range. |
